I do agree, but it’s important visitors are able to find websites and pagerank “sometimes” does correlate with this. If a website has a high pagerank then it’s probably been linked to by fairly good websites therefore will get visitors.

However, I do agree that it’s not the end of the world having no pagerank (or low pagerank) if the website still performs well.

@sakthi, there’re more to Page rank calculation than the numbers on this table. This was only indicative and Google has started considering various other aspects of a page’s authority in deciding its page rank.

Hi,
I have some doubt in the table.

As per table, If I need to get PR4 means, I should get 101 backlinks from PR3 sites.

In such case, those 101 PR3 sites should give links ‘ONLY’ to my site or it can share its link with many other sites?
That is, Whether ONLY my websites link should be in those 101 PR3 sites or the PR3 sites can have more number of sites to give PR?

This is verty informative article.Google Page Rank (PR) is one of the foremost indicators about the popularity of a blog, website or a single web page. Very good article, Ajith, i didn’t know about the numbers of backlinks to have to reach a certain PR but i think it is not very efficient because our PR can depends of the quality of the site where we create backlink.

Webber: i’m not the owner of this site but i want to give you a answer to your question: yes, Google can decreases your PR or even suspend/ban your site if you have too many bad backlinks (backlinks from sites which are considered as sandbox).

Very good article, Ajith, i didn’t know about the numbers of backlinks to have to reach a certain PR but i think it is not very efficient because our PR can depends of the quality of the site where we create backlink. ^^

Well, that’s not exactly true. There is no real bad link, except for a site that’s been banned. ALL links have some value, if even just by association.

Comment links are counted only if the links don’t carry the rel=nofollow property or in other words if they are dofollow links.

@Shirley, thanks… In fact, moving from PR4 to PR5 (and upwards) is considered a daunting task and is well explained by the chart. This may be only indicative as penalty matters are not considered.

@Lee, that’s a good news. But have you thought of hitting 75 or 80% traffic from search? That’s when PR and keyword optimization play a greater role.

@qarla, the chart is from TNX and not made by me But it’s true that PR calculation (internal PR) rely a lot on number of backlinks with varying authorities.

@jgand, the PR is ‘Page Rank’ and it’s applicable for every single page (out of the millions) that is indexed by Google – not just for blogs. In fact, other search engines also have similar mechanisms for their internal use. It’s just that Google made it a big thing due to their highly successful Searc Engine Marketing.

My search traffic (nearly all from Google) went from 52% of total visitors up to 58% over that period, that’s why I don’t think pr matters too much.

@Lee, for the ‘search’ traffic it is really important. May not be for the overall traffic. Your traffic might have increased, but did the search traffic increase or at least maintained at the same level when you dropped from PR5 to PR2? I doubt that

If you have several thousand referral visitors or RSS visitors, you don’t need to worry about PR.

Another thing, sometimes to get quality advertisers, you might need a good PR as well.

How important do you think PR really is? One of my sites went from pr5 to pr4 to pr3 to pr2 over the last few updates but traffic is up 150%. Go figure!

Google puts some weightage (nobody knows how much) on internal linking as well. Basically it shows how connected and logically related your entire website content is… You will see that some pages with good internal linking (even internal trackbacks) tend to get a high PR even without many external links.

An example is below:
http://www.dollarshower.com/article-spinning-to-promote-your-blog/

This article has four to five internal links and only one or two external links – that too not from high PR pages. It happens to get a PR but many other articles written long back, with more backlinks don’t have one.
