Get other blogs’ feed count and statistics
Ajith | Jul 2008 | Cool Websites, How Do I?
Whenever I see a new comment or a MyBlogLog visitor on my blog, the very first thing I do is to check out his/her blog. After quickly scanning through a couple of posts there, I head for some nosey activities like checking this blog’s popularity in terms of traffic ranks, feed subscriber count etc. Further I would definitely subscribe to the RSS feed, right then, if the blog is interesting.
Talking about feeds, there are a number of bloggers out there who opt for not displaying their feed count or FeedBurner chicklets for whatever reasons. However, there are a number of ways to see their feed count via some free tools and tricks. I would explain three such methods here that can be used to get others’ FeedBurner based feed statistics.
Method #1: If somebody has enabled their FeedCount but not displaying the same on their blog you can use the following URL to access the count.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~fc/feedname
For example, my blog’s feed count – if I was not displaying it publicly – is accessed via the URL http://feeds.feedburner.com/~fc/dollarshower
Method #2: FeedCompare is an excellent service built around the FeedBurner Awareness API that can be used to compare the feed traffic of up to four sites at a time. All that you need to enter there is the feed name as per the FeedBurner account and this service provides you comparison charts for the past 1, 3, 6, 12 or 24 months (See the chart below). Moving the cursor on the chart will also give you the feed traffic count for a particular day.
Method #3: BlogPerfume had launched a feed analysis tool last year which is pretty useful to analyze the feed traffic. This tool takes your FeedBurner feed name as an input and provides charts such as monthly traffic, weekly traffic breakup across weekdays, weekends etc.
Feed Analysis also incorporates a predictive mechanism that tells you how many feed subscribers you will add in another 3 months, 6 months or one year if the subscription rate goes at this rate. But this is not something that you need to bother too much about, though it is a major confidence booster (It says that D$ will have 137,578 RSS subscribers in another one year). But I really like their weekly analysis that shows the best day and worst day of the week in terms of feed traffic – A very good indication for you as when to publish your best post of the week!
Please note that any of the above methods would work only if the FeedBurner account, that you are checking, has enabled either FeedCount or AwarenessAPI in the Publicize section. Well, that is another tip for those who want to block the world from accessing own feed statistics!

Nice article this one. Does that mean that even if you disable feed count there are ways to get it?
Regards,
Vijay
Nope… Unless you expose the feecount or AwarenessAPI from your feedburner account, nobody can get your data.

Akhil,
I did not quite understand your question. Are you talking about updating your blogroll (adding links to other blogs from your blog)?
Cheers,
Ajith

Akhil,
You need to do a number of things. Commenting on other blogs, submitting to search engines, participating in forums, link exchanges with similar blogs are a few things that you need to do to slowly improve your search ranks.
1)Tools that you could use: comment kahuna is a free tool that you can use to comment on other blogs. Read the following posts:
http://www.dollarshower.com/dofollocom-search-for-dofollow-pages/
http://www.dollarshower.com/comment-kahuna-comment-away-to-glory/
2) Submit your blog to free search engine submission sites such as submitexpress.com. Be sure to use a temporary email id, else you get spammed!
3) Be active in forums that will build backlinks easily… Without so many backlinks, your blog will not figure in search engine results easily nor get a good page rank.
4) Exchange your blog link with others (friends’ blog etc)
That much for now, you could email me (ajithprasad@yahoo.com) if you have any specific questions.
Cheers,
Ajith
