Health Hazards of Blogging

Last week, I had my annual health check up done and found out that I have developed so many undesirable health issues in the past one year or so. This includes RSI or Repetitive Strain Injury (Check out the famous MMO bloggers’s hand in the picture), RSI due excessive blogginglow HDL levels, insomnia, lower back pain and high blood pressure (owing more due the regular job). Most of these issues were developed six months ago or so when I was more regular at blogging and was spending quite a lot of time online on a daily basis.

Health issues due to computer overusage

The following are some of the typical issues that people, who use computers excessively, face:-

#1 RSI
The RSI on the palms, like in my case, is one of the most common issues that most computer users face. The little swelling that is found near the palm-wrist joint can get really bad if it goes to the advanced stages. In my case, it’s just a small swelling that’s not very painful yet but it’s there on both my palms. Well, I have coded for almost 15 years now but it developed only in the last one year.

#2 Eye strain
Monitors are getting better these days as they emit less unwanted rays and heat compared to the CRT era. However, staring at the same for a few hours together can cause eye strain and watering/itching eyes. Eye strain can also be caused when the top border of the monitor is not aligned with the eye level.

#3 Back injury
Bad postures while using computers and wrong chair height adjustment can cause back pain and lumbar problems. Another related problem is the neck strain due to bad height adjustment.

#4 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
I read about this for the first time while researching for this blog post. It seems CTS causes numbness and weakness of the wrists and palms and this is mainly due to the compressed median nerve of the palms. Basically, wrong palm & finger position on the keyboard causes this condition.

#5 Infertility due to laptop usage
Laptops (quite ironical to the name) if used extensively in the laps seem to cause low fertility among men. This is mainly due to the heat generated by the laptop

Blogger specific issues

What I mentioned above are the physical conditions caused by excessive computer usage in general. On top of the above, many budding bloggers adapt a very unhealthy lifestyle that involves the following:

Many bloggers do work late, sleep very late and get up too late in the morning as well. This doesn’t do any good to the human body system.

#Junk foods
Spending too much time on the computer leads to eating at times on the workstation itself and these food items are usually junk food, sugared and aerated beverages etc.

#Lack of exercise
Many of them (unfortunately) do not spend enough time in the gym nor do they engage themselves with basic fitness activities such as jogging, swimming, and walking.

#Lack of personal time
These days even when you are at home, on the move or even driving, you have the possibility to tweet, moderate comments or browse via the mobile. Basically, the face-to-face interaction with your family, relatives and friends reduce but you expect them to be online to chat.

There are several other uncategorized blogging specific problems such as Blog Stats Mania, Pressure-to-Post-Daily Syndrome, Frequently Checking AdSense Earnings Disorder, Commentluv Ailment, Google Stalking Syndrome etc 🙂 We will talk about them in another post. Until then, I would like to know more about your lifestyle in the context of your online or computer related work life.

Happy (stress-free) Blogging!

  1. Everything in excess causes problems. Keep blogging within limits and we can easily avoid all these..Sorry, for this… But I know I can limit my blogging adventure!

  2. just an fyi, you need to update your commentluv plugin. the old one you have no longer works

    • No wonder I don’t see any link love to our previous post. Ajith, seems that you need to upgrade your commentluv plugin version to merge with your latest wordpress version. 🙂

  3. @ Techfreek, i agree with you, excess of every thing is bad, but if we control over passion and keep blogging and also proper checkup can solve the prob

  4. Luckily no health issues as such yet, but I have all the “uncategorized blogging specific problems”. LOL!!
On a serious note, lack of personal time is a major challenge especially for someone like you and me for whom blogging is secondary job.

  5. OMG..!! I got most of them. I got RSI on my hand and also am suffering with most of the above mentioned things .

I think proper exercise will be the best medicine and also restricting ourselves to work in certain time limits will help you be healthy and also wealthy. 😀

  6. Very informative post, last time I had read a post about a bloggers lifestyle.Since then I am trying to maintain the balance while I am blogging.Till now everything going well.

  7. Please take very good care of yourself.

  8. You are right about that, as blogger we usually have that circumtances, we have to take care our health too,

  9. Already got back pain 🙂 Good list but we can’t avoid any of these 🙂

  10. Sorry to hear about it buddy. Do take care of yourself. Personally I’m working from home for the past one year and the only thing I found was lack of exercise. I did start to put on weight, but nothing serious. Since then I’ve started exercising on a stepper since I used to climb a lot of stairs previously and that worked great for me. Other than that nothing else…

  11. Too bad to see that Ajith and I hope you’re fine now. I know that most of the blogger face this problem especially full time blogger who sit in front the computer 12hours a day. Luckily I’m not a full time blogger right now but I still need to sit in front of computer for about 12 hours a day as I need to work.

Between, I play Badminton every Monday, we should really do some exercises at least one day in a week, so that we could have healthy body. 🙂

  12. The post which must be read by all the bloggers! Thanks! 🙂

  13. i think i am starting to suffer bit of back pain and eyes pain….

  14. I can so relate to this post. The stereotype of the computer geek working late and consuming pizza has come about for a reason. I cringe whenever I read on blogs how much pizza (and other fast foods) got consumed during a workshop / hack day / etc…

  15. That’s true Ajith but the problem is not only for Bloggers any one who spend lots of time online he also face the similar problems.

For an example when I was in school and in the early days of my college, I was more into social networking website and Gaming , I used to spend almost 8 hours a day after school/college in front of PC and I started facing all these problem, Later on I started using proper chair, Keep taking rest in between and more ever started few physical exercise that helped me a lot.

  16. I have most of these including the RSI and the Back Problem and other Blogger specific issues. But ever since i have started working, my sleeping habits have improved. And i also try to play outdoor games or go walking during the weekends

  17. @TechFreak, That’s exactly what I am practicing now – limiting the blogging activities to an acceptable range. Six months back, things were different!

@Andy, I in fact, installed the new CommentLuv plugin for some weird reasons it is not showing up 🙁 Gotta debug!

@Teratips, right… we have to go slow on even the most passionate things 🙂

@Raju, you are right buddy. The reason for going slow on post frequency, commenting etc was mainly due to the pressure from work 🙂 But these days, I am making sure that my personal (family) time is not at stake.

@Prashant, stretch and relaxation exercises while at your workstation, can also do wonders if you cannot really do it the hard and organized way.

@George, you may be young and strong so it may not show up now 🙂 I am in the middle age already haha…

    @Shanker bhai, thanks buddy 🙂

@David, absolutely – We need to take care of those challenging and competitive situations that bloggers go though via better planning/time management.

@Lax, back pain among youngsters is more now… I remember my parents dealing with it when they were above 50… The youngsters’ lifestyle is costing them their health even in twenties.

@Rajiv, I am going slow now buddy… First is health, then wealth though we need both to take care of the dependents 🙂 Right now, I am walking on a regular basis – for at least 4-5 kms

@Lee, Good to know about your lifestyle… Although, blogging is a part time activity for me, my main job is also computer related and needs me to be staring at the puter for at least 8 hrs a day!

    @Shafar, thanks for the compliments.

@Tushar, eye and back pain are the most common problems of computer usage.

@Jacques, you got a point… ‘Pizza on PC’ lifestyle along with tobacco, coke (caffeine) or coffee completes the list… Very unhealthy lifestyle indeed.

@Harsh, I was relating to other people who use the computers as well. It’s addictive as there’s no particular limit to what you can do online or what needs to be done for the day etc.

@Madhur, Good to know that you are active when it comes to outdoor activities as well. Many others actually don’t do anything except eating, sleeping, blogging!

Thank you all for sharing your experiences!

  18. ohh you’re so right…I am currently in holiday and sleeping on my blog lol.. I have eye and neck pain and even my wrist is like a numb at times.

Thanks god i dnt put the laptop on my lap lol. Its everytime on the table except if am watching tv then i get a small living room table and place it on it.

  19. Very much true.

    I agree with you.

I have Stats syndrome, Google adsense syndrome and lots of others 🙂

Need to do excercise which is nil at this stage.

  20. Taking a hour off from your computer to exercise will not kill your blogging career. In fact, it helps you develop more ideas. I think about my next topic to blog about, ways to make money online, etc while jogging, and working out in the gym. It helps a lot to perfect your ideas, and at the same time, gives you a healthy lifestyle.
