A look back at 2009 and Blogging Objectives for 2010

Posted on January 4, 2010 by Ajith | 14 Comments

During the month of January last year, I jotted down some exciting blogging objectives for the year 2009 and later provided two updates (March update & Septemer update) on how I was doing with respect to those goals.

Instead of providing a point by point update on those online goals (and their revisions), I thought of writing this postmortem report on what went well and what quite didn’t during the last one year. A lot of unexpected things happened in 2009 which, I thought, have forced several bloggers to quit blogging.

15 tips to get more comments on your blog

Posted on December 22, 2009 by Ajith | 22 Comments

The number of comments per post on this blog has reduced drastically over the past six months or so while the traffic remained much the same. However, the monetization aspects are getting better and better despite this reduction in reader engagement. The learning here is that, getting a lot of comments on a particular blog dosen’t always mean that it is hugely successful or popular. It may be also noted that, many highly popular blogs receive few comments where the comments to visitors ratio is 1:200 or even 1:500.

Nevertheless, let me share a few things that worked for me in the past in terms of getting a lot of comments. In fact compared to getting link backs or traffic, receiving a lot of comments is not all that difficult. The following are some of the comment baiting (that’s my imaginative phrase) technics:

Category Feeds in WordPress

Posted on December 19, 2009 by Ajith | 6 Comments

The WordPress platform provides a number of feed subscription mechanisms for the blog readers. It exposes RSS, RDF and Atom feed formats – for both blog posts and comments.

For most practical purposes, it is good enough if your readers are able to find your default feed URL for posts that is permalinked like http://www.YourBlogDomain.com/feed. (This default URL, in most cases, is redirected to the FeedBurner mainly to get and highlight feed statistics). However, the WordPress platform also exposes the category feeds which is only available in default domain feed format (and not in FeedBurner).

The Best Time to Post or Update your Blog

Posted on December 15, 2009 by Ajith | 23 Comments

Now, this is a tricky one! I have seen a lot of posts on the blogosphere regarding this topic and most of them suggested that that many pro-bloggers actually pick a particular time to post their new content. Why? While it is widely believed that good content will always sell, the timing of your blog posts can sometime matter – especially if you want to create the maximum impact within minutes after updating your blog.

Just like the timing on a day, there are people who publish their important posts on certain ‘good’ days of the week as well. When I thought about this topic a bit, I figured out that there are a number of variables that decide the best time and date to post. Let us talk about these factors first.
