Google Analytics Async & Google Plusone Async: Make your blog Load Superfast!

Ajith |  | 2 Comments

Have you recently taken your blog for a performance test with Pingdom tools? If not, I suggest that you do it right now and focus on those javascript social widgets that contribute to the increased page load time. The main culprits typically are:

  • Google Plusone widget
  • Google Analytics code (older one)
  • Facebook like button

Please note that by increased page load time, we are not necessarily talking about large sized objects and scripts alone. The page load time sometimes is caused by the servers that do not respond well due to millions of hits coming their way.

Page Speed Optimization of your Website

Ajith |  | 1 Comment

I am a person who is obsessed with application performance – be it web applications, desktop or mobile apps, I really get frustrated if screen refreshes take longer especially due to bulky code written by web developers and non-optimized images getting included in web pages.

When it comes to tuning my blogs or websites for performance (even when I was on shared hosting), I make sure that I save as many bytes as possible – especially on the home page – by optimizing images, going for a lean theme, avoiding heavy CSS/JS files and removing all unwanted comments, longer variable names etc. And Google Page Speed only made me more paranoid about those unwanted bytes.

It has been a long pending decision for me because the number of mini-blogs and sites that I manage has been increasing every month and the performance of my shared web server has been heading south.

Basically, I decided to sign up with a suitable VPS hosting account for my medium to high traffic authority blogs while reserving the shared hosting account for mini-blogs and landing pages. If you are planning to move to VPS, I would recommend HostGator VPS i.e. if you want to just signup and forget (or let the support team do everything for you). There are other amazing VPS hosting providers as well.

Ajith |  | 8 Comments

I still clearly remember that Yahoo was the very first URL that I browsed in my Internet Explorer 1.0 (or beta release?) browser way back in 1995. I had just joined my first job and was all excited about the Internet access that was provided to us after 5PM every day through a single dedicated machine in the whole company.

yahoo-failsI always thought Yahoo is an amazing company that produced huge volume of organized content bundled with strong search capability as early as in 1994. Their portal was a highly usable and browsable one despite featuring traditional looks. Despite all those services and acquisitions its vital numbers have been declining for the past three years or so an let us examine why.

Ajith |  | 4 Comments

Over the last five posts, you have probably already figured out the importance of Webmaster tools and the kind of inputs that it provides you in order to manage your website or blog better. In fact, I wanted to touch upon a couple more optimization topics in individual posts but for brevity sake, let me try to summarize everything in this last post in the series.

Please note that except for the webmaster guidelines from Google, there is no hard and fast rule on how to use Webmaster tools. I just derived my way of using with trial and error approach.
