WordPress ping list or Update Services

Your WordPress blog has a great feature called Update Services that basically alert a number of blog directories, content aggregators and social media sites whenever your update your blog. This is an extremely useful feature as your new posts will be reaching millions of web users worldwide much faster than the search engine (search engines spiders will take some more time to crawl & index) route.

By default, WordPress provides the update service provided by Ping-O-Matic which is a very reliable service. The option to alert the Ping-O-Matic service, is available via Settings->Writing->Update Services section in your WordPress admin panel and this entry will by default have http://rpc.pingomatic.com/‘ listed there. What Ping-O-Matic does is that, it in turn alerts a number of services to update your aggregated content on their sites.

In most cases the above set up is good enough. But as the number of social media and aggregator services are growing day by day and you may as well have subscribed to many of them. So instead of using a single service, you may need to use a number of them to directly ping the sites which need to be updated with your latest content. If you visit your MyBlogLog or BlogCatalog profile and see that your RSS feeds are not updated for a couple of days, you now have the reason behind the same.

The following are some of the services that I have added to my WordPress ping list (updated via the settings option). I have seen some improvements in the area of udpating the feed after making this change.

Some of these links when added to your settings may accelerate the updating of your syndicated content at your favorite social media sites as well as major blog search directories. Please make sure that, every time you sign up with a new directory or bookmarking service, their ping services are included in your ping list.

Feedburner PingShot

Feedburner has a bulk update service called PingShot under their Publicize tab. You must enable the PingShot service in your Feedburner account and also select all relevant update services there in.

Please keep in mind that if you have already selected a certain ping service in your WordPress settings, you may not include the same in PingShot.

With the above changes, your content will be reaching millions must faster than you could imagine!

  1. moserw :

This is a good list. I am adding the missing ones to my WP. Thanks for sharing Ajith. Much appreciated.

  2. Adam :

    Thanks for this.

  3. Ajith :

You are most welcome Rajeev and Adam.

    • Randy :

      Mr. Ajith
please help me to understand and to know how can my website being view using all the ping site.
I really want my website increase the traffic with out paying the seo.. is it possible sir… Thank you

      • Just putting ping servers don’t necessarily translate to traffic – that helps in indexing your content faster. You need to build good backlinks and update your site often to get good relevant traffic.

  4. Just having a look and the list(ping) is here lol… I was looking for such a list itself :-)

Kurt Avish’s last blog post… I am eating KFC and today is a busy day!

  5. Nihar :

    Great list.

I have added all listed above. some of them were already there.

Quick question. If we add lot of service. will it slowdown the updating of post?

  6. @Kurt, great… I am glad that it was useful to you.

@Nihar, it won’t slowdown the posting process. Afterall, the posting performance is no big issue isn’t it? You usually do it once per post. If it’s something that affects the end user (each rendering of your blog), then I would worry about it?

  7. Ruchi :

Most of them are missing in my ping list i will update is , thanks for sharing it.

  8. Jenny :

The list is too big for me and chances r there that you end up pinging one site many times n getting banned b’coz multi pinger sites like pingomatic.com automatically ping many other sites in the list.

  9. Is it really necessary to ping all the different variants of Google’s Blog Search?

  10. Mike :

You should mention that if you use a giant ping list, it’s good to throttle the pings using either Maxblogpress’ ping optimizer or something similar…don’t want to be a ping spammer.

  11. You have to use two additional plugin for better optimization of your ping tool. Read this http://www.internetgeeks.org/blog/how-to-use-wordpress-ping-utility-without-getting-banned/

    Thanks!

  12. Save time automate ping here http://www.pingblogs.us/

    John

  13. Davis :

An alternative would be to automate ping such as http://www.pingblogs.us/

  14. Thanks for this list. I have updated my existing list.

  15. It’s a great list but be careful of duplicates. As someone else mentioned, duplicate pings are dangerous!

  16. In Feedburner, under Publicize, I have enabled PingShot. However, I see no options to specify which service(s) PingShot notifies. Therefore I see no way to avoid duplicate pings by PingShot (to whichever services it has automatically selected) and the ones I’ve manually put in the list. Am I missing something?

Currently, I’ve enabled pingomatic (the default), and additional list of services that includes all of yours plus those listed on the WordPress codex (with dups removed), and Feedburner pingshot. Hopefully this won’t lead to duplicate pings? I’ve also installed the CBNET plug-in to prevent pings at every update.

    • @Eric, I am not sure if the latest WordPress versions actually ping servers on update (after one publish). If you check the wp_post table, there’s a column that has this update value set as 0 or 1. Somehow I do not worry about this multiple ping theory :)

  17. thanks ajith will it increase my traffic , with these pings?

  18. thanks! great post. i was searching for pinging services but most of the top results on google werent giving me anything. should i add all of them or just the top ones?

  19. @abhilash, pings alone won’t increase traffic. It may help your content to get indexed faster.

    @Jesus, top ones should do.

  20. I was using pingdom for the same. I think I have come across pingomatic in wordpress and had updated it some time back..not sure…I need to revisit it. Interesting post Ajith!
