Comments on: WordPress ping list or Update Services

Hi,
I was depending pingomatic services and this post opened my eyes.
If any one add these URLs to their blog please make sure that the urls are entered or copy pasted correctly. It can be easily checked via the following method, If you have MS Office installed.
Copy the URLs from this post to a new Blank Excel spreadsheet in one column (A1). Filter the column and remove blank rows
In the adjoining column (B1) copy paste the URLs from your WP Update Services.
Use the below formula in next column (C1) and copy and paste it to the bottom.
=IF(A1=B1,”ok”)

I was using pingdom for the same. I think I have come across pingomatic in wordpress and had updated it some time back..not sure…I need to revisit it. Interesting post Ajith!

@abhilash, pings alone won’t increase traffic. It may help your content to get indexed faster.

@Eric, I am not sure if the latest WordPress versions actually ping servers on update (after one publish). If you check the wp_post table, there’s a column that has this update value set as 0 or 1. Somehow I do not worry about this multiple ping theory

In Feedburner, under Publicize, I have enabled PingShot. However, I see no options to specify which service(s) PingShot notifies. Therefore I see no way to avoid duplicate pings by PingShot (to whichever services it has automatically selected) and the ones I’ve manually put in the list. Am I missing something?

Currently, I’ve enabled pingomatic (the default), and additional list of services that includes all of yours plus those listed on the WordPress codex (with dups removed), and Feedburner pingshot. Hopefully this won’t lead to duplicate pings? I’ve also installed the CBNET plug-in to prevent pings at every update.

It’s a great list but be careful of duplicates. As someone else mentioned, duplicate pings are dangerous!

You should mention that if you use a giant ping list, it’s good to throttle the pings using either Maxblogpress’ ping optimizer or something similar…don’t want to be a ping spammer.

The list is too big for me and chances r there that you end up pinging one site many times n getting banned b’coz multi pinger sites like pingomatic.com automatically ping many other sites in the list.

@Nihar, it won’t slowdown the posting process. Afterall, the posting performance is no big issue isn’t it? You usually do it once per post. If it’s something that affects the end user (each rendering of your blog), then I would worry about it?
