Ajith | Dec 2008 | Blogging Tips, Miscellaneous

In fact, today I wanted to talk about emerging blogging trends in a bigger post but due to lack of time, I am just sharing my (draft) thoughts on the trends as well as certain facts about blogs. I would leave these bullet points to you to ponder over and I guess they are more or less self explanatory.

Facts and Trends in Blogging

#1 Most bloggers start new blogging ventures
#2 Blog flipping – Resulting from #1 and otherwise
#3 Multiple blogger blogs for more professionalism and to maintain frequency
#4 Micro blogging though at a low pace of growth
#5 Media blogging/commenting – Video blogs, podcasts, video commenting etc.
#6 20-80 principle – 20% effort on writing and 80% on talking about it (marketing)
#7 Magazine themes regardless of whether it is naturally good for reading
#8 Bloggers are insomniacs who spend 16-20 hours online
#9 If you don’t post daily, you are branded incompetent and not leading the great DotCom lifestyle!
#10 Content is King, Keyword is Queen and twitter (or Social Network) is ‘Pimp’
#11 Bloggers can become great consultants regardless of their skill levels
#12 Bloggers start ad networks thanks to 1000s of guaranteed publishers
#13 Blog contests and eBooks are part of winning (survival) formula
#14 125×125 banners and AdSense blocks are considered content
#15 Bloggers feel guilty if half a square inch of white space go un-monetized (is that a word?)
#16 You are considered a fool if you are not on self-hosted WordPress
#17 Bloggers are satelites of the Google planet and your PR # has more value than your School Grade
#18 Bloggers are geeks, at least they think so!
#19 Once you become rich and famous, you preach and others listen (and replying to comments is not your job)
#20 Bullet point blogging – An advanced form of microblogging – started only a few minutes back, right here :)

Please feel free to fill in #21 onwards… Right below this line starts your playground!

Ha! Well, perhaps I’m not the ‘typical’ blogger. I’ve never known where to ’stuff ads’. I don’t think of myself as a geek, even though others do. And while I am an insomniac, it has more to do with my obsession with code than actual blogging…. (hmm. Maybe that makes me a geek.)

    Nice list. :-)

100% agreed with you… now a days blogger less concern about quality content and more about the marketing.

    i want to add #21

#21 It is crime for a blogger to not monetize his blog. and the penalty is “GET OUT” of blogging world. Nobody looks at his blog. :D

Awesome post Ajit. I love #1 and #2 as I focus more on those two.

LOL! @ 10, gotta love it. So many are so true. Good job. :)

  7. Ajith Prasad says:

@Insomniac err…Shirley :) Good to know that you are one of those developer turned blogger like some of us. Developers rock! Sometimes bloggers as well

@Sky Xavier, thanks for adding $21. It’s very true that if bloggers don’t monetize the question is then what’s the blog for? A few people have asked me in the past what took me so long to monetize? (and I haven’t still monetized it fully). Great point from you!

@Qarla, thanks :D By the way, can I use ‘Pinay’ to address any Filipino or is it like some people get offended by it??

@Harish, thanks buddy… I know, many young bloggers like you are big time into creating newer sites/blogs and flipping. All of you are having a great time with flipping, I guess.

@Dennis, So you like #10 ha… Sky Xavier is another fan of the same. I am somehow obsessed with the number 10 (like famous soccer players jerseys) that I alway write about 10 tips or 10+10 tips or even make the 10th tip a kick-a$$ when I have more…

    Thanks everybody for your comments!

  8. Hi Ajith – Boy have you nailed it. I was reading the list, nodding my head, saying, “Yup, I see all of that happening”. Blogs just aren’t what they used to be.

I’m happy to say #8 doesn’t apply to me. I have to have my sleep.

  9. Shirley says:

@Sky Xavier. Wow! Harsh penalty. You know, there are other reasons that people blog, besides bringing in money. Some people use it to bring traffic to their otherwise static site. Some people use it to advertise their services or products. Or some people just use it for something on their resume. So there is good non-monetary compensation.

  10. Its funny cause they are all so true. I have seen sooooo many blogs being flipped lately. I hate that 19 is true.

Ahem, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I cannot relate to any of the points, ahem, made above there – not one – neither have I, ahem, seen any glimpses of these trends in the blogsphere (she says at 12.08am having spent a century in front of the computer scratching her armpits as she umms and ahhs about blog flipping and monetising)

“10 tips” is always a good post. :)

  13. Ajith Prasad says:

@Barbara, it’s all about the ‘generation’. Though blogging is for all age groups, locations, groups, races, th expectation is much the same. Isn’t it a pity that bloggers need to be highly technical to be more successful? And why do they expect people to write scripts instead of publishing? And why do people believe that blogging is all about money? I was trying to highlight some of the side-effects :)

@Shirley, good point. However, with Google recently launching their ‘AdSense for parked domains’ I think even they are expecting every single blog page on earth to be full of ads…

@BlogForBloggers, unfortunately for the ‘rich and famous’, their precious time has to be spend for selling affiliate links, participating in ad networks sponsored campaigns, writing more posts, starting new blogs to make the best out of the current subscription base etc. Hence replying to comments is not their job  nor their assistant’s who has been hired for that purpose and managing the income-expense tables. In fact, after seeing that my comments go unnoticed/unreplied I completely stopped commenting on John Chow, ShoeMoney etc… I still comment once in a while on ProBlogger.

    @2TP, Hahaha that’s the typical you…
(For the sake of others who haven’t visited her blog yet. please check out GetPaidToFart.com to read some real good humour)

    @Dennis, good observation ;)

  14. lol.
Their is no real conversation at those sites, and commenting those sites is like trying to talk to the server behind it. So I only comment at them if I need a little more exposure.

  15. Ajith, I’ll like to add point number 21…
#21 – release an e book about your journey from Rags to Riches how how to achieved it.
    :p

In most cases though, the information is useless. ;)

@ BFB, ha… that’s right? Once John Chow asked his readers for opinion on his new blog theme. With all my software and usability experise I (just like quite a few others) answered with a lot of plus and minus points only to hurt my fingers and increase my ‘repetitive stress injury’… Since then, I haven’t gone to his blog  I still read it on RSS once in a while, but I won’t comment

@DM, haha that’s a really good point. When I actually take a look at some of those eBooks, many of them are either stale ideas or complete non-sense. I guess, some of those pioneers were really good (like Joel com)

By the way, your tip would be #22 as Sky Xavier had a point related to monetization

  17. Shirley says:

@Domain Marvelous. Yes, Completely useless. lol. I have yet to find a convincing eBook that’s not trying to sell you on an obviously SCAM product and will actually help YOU become successful…

The best eBooks are the ones that have several releases… Part 1, Part 2, Part 3… all stringing you along with the promise of success. :-)

Shirley’s last blog post… Lorem Ipsum… Blah, Blah, Blah

  18. Ajith Prasad says:

@Shirley, that is a good point. Some of those eBooks I have read are too short and without any essence that actually they should have been yet another blog post on their respective blogs

  19. I guess I’m a total idiot then – I don’t have ads on my main site and there is a lot of white space ;-) I don’t have trouble with insomnia – sometimes I stay up too late but it isn’t always because of blogging – frequently it’s reading a book I can’t put down.

I’m not thrilled with the trend of magazine themes – they have their use but they are really being overused. I often find the interface cluttered and can’t locate the information that I want.

    People love lists Ajith ;-)

  20. Ajith Prasad says:

@Kim, sounds like you are not really leading a DotCom lifestyle roflmao

On a serious note, people are forgeting real life of late and clinging on to too much of cyber lifestyle…that’s what inspired me to post the bullets. And you are right, people do not know when to use them.

Good to know that you still read a few pages (not online) before sleeping. It’s a great habit!

  21. LOL, this is a good list. #14 is pretty original. I can’t exactly remember the last time I heard of “twitter is pimp”. Lastly, I hope I can be rich and famous soon so that I could outsource replying to my comments… ;) Once again, good take. You have a good sense of humor too, Ajith.

  23. Ajith,

First, I have to apologize that I didn’t read your blog for last two weeks.

Second, I’m glad I did today. It’s never too late.

In my opinion, this is post is extremely hilarious. I completely enjoyed reading it. You’ve given a knock-out punch to both “rookie” (#18) and “experienced” (#19) bloggers.
