Right Time to Start Your New Self-Hosted Professional Blog

host a blogIn the last post I did a comparative study on Wordpress.com and Blogger.com (blogspot) free blogging platforms. Many experienced readers and bloggers shared their thoughts there in and felt that it is always better to go for a self-hosted professional blog keeping your long term blogging plans (or even career) in mind.

And there is no better time than right now to register your domain(s) - as a first step towards building a professional blog - because GoDaddy is offering 99 cents domain names! by using the coupon code ‘99DOMAIN‘. I first read it on SlyVisions today and I thank Sly for sharing this information.

Create pillar posts and foundation - Take your new blog to success in two months - Part III

One of the common mistakes that many new bloggers make is to go live too early or before it is actually ready for mass acceptance. In the third post of this series, let me share a few experiences which could be useful tips for some of you to prepare your new blog for launch!

Phase 5: Create & configure initial content
After setting up your wordpress blog as per our last post, it is now time to start building the initial content and content relationship entities such as tags, categories and permalink structure. There may be a few other things such as some default sidebar widgets but they are not as important as the content itself.

Initial content checklist
The following are the bare minimum content you must have before you can think of making the blog public.

  • The very first post should be a welcome post that explains the motive behind your blog and what you intend to offer
  • The welcome post should be followed by three or four (or more if you can) posts that underline the main subject Click Here to Continue Reading

Setting up basic building blocks - Take your new blog to success in two months - Part II

In the very first post of this series, I talked about how to plan ahead in terms of finalizing what your blog stands (main theme) for and then get a blog space and a domain name. Once you are a proud owner of your own domain and hosting space you can immediately start preparing your domain and the hosting account for installing Wordpress. Even if you registered for your free blogging space at Wordpress.com,
the number of steps to follow (except for setting up of email accounts etc) will be much the same. So let us talk about this particular phase of the blog that is just about to be born.

Phase 3. Preparing your hosting account
Most hosting providers have excellent dashboards such as cPanel to help you with configuring, managing and maintaining your hosting account features such as email accounts, MySQL databases, sub domains, installables etc. Click Here to Continue Reading

Take your new blog to success in two months - Part I (Register the domain & hosting space)

Today D$ completes two months in the blogosphere. So many things happened during these two months - some good, some not so. Instead of dissecting things too much I would like to take this opportunity to tip the budding bloggers and wannabes on how to set up a blog, how typically a blog grows and how many things need to be taken care of while setting up a new blog. As I kept recording the events during the past couple of months, it is easier for me to talk about the same and I hope this information is useful to some of you - experienced bloggers please excuse. Since I cannot cover everything in one single post, I am splitting this topic into more than one part. Important tips for the beginners are marked with a ‘light bulb’ .

Phase 1. Planning
Before starting this blog I had some reasonably good blogging and website development experience. But as I was sick of doing personal homepages and generic stuff, I wanted to do something differently this time around. After quite some thinking I decided to set up a blog related to making money online. I knew that there are 1000s of such blogs and websites around but I thought there’s always untapped opportunities in this space. Click Here to Continue Reading
