Make your blog look great on any browser – even on mobile

One of the issues that every blogger face – especially after a theme change or browser upgrade – is that his blog starts misbehaving with different browser applications and screen resolutions. The issues can range from minor painting issues to major alignment problems. Majority of the issues can be solved by making the theme code XHTML compliant and by avoiding making changes to the blog platform’s core codebase. Mobile Browser CompatibilityAdded third party (advertisements, tracking code, badges etc) scripts are other culprits that make a blog look ugly sometimes.

In this post, I would like to provide some tips and tools that will make your blog look great in every possible browser and device – provided the browser application itself is majorly bug free. [Read more...]

10 things that rub your blog visitors the wrong way!

In the last post – on why visitors quickly exit your blog – I promised to write about things that your guests, especially the search and referral visitors, hate to see in your blog. In fact, the opposite scenarios of those 10 good traits, that we talked about, themselves form the hate list. But I have more in my hate list here.

My hate list

10 things I hate about youThe following are those ten things that could create a very bad first impression (and hence the last impression as well, mostly) among your search visitors.

#1 CPU or bandwidth exceeded warnings: How often have you seen it? I get to see it a couple of times a week with one or the other blog. This happens mainly [Read more...]

The all-important 10 seconds to fame or shame!

No more back button If you have a Search Engine optimized (SEO) blog then chances are high that 40-50% of your visitors are coming via web search. Though SEO takes care of luring the search users into your blog, it does not guarantee any positive action from them thereafter nor can it extend the stay of the visitor. Hence your blog, at the most, has 10 seconds to prove its worth and hospitality before the search visitor hits the back button or decide to stay on.

A couple of posts ago I talked about some tips to reduce the bounce rate of your blog. In this post I shall talk about 10 things that you could do in order get buy-in from the search visitor in as low as 10 seconds – In fact, you have less than ten seconds after discounting the page load time. Blog Innovation and sustainability – Take a leaf from Apple

Earlier this year, Apple Inc was voted the Business Weeks’s most innovative company Apple Inc. in the world, from a list of 50 prestigious companies that are known for innovation and successful business models. Apple‘s feat of being in that position for the fourth time straight is something that needs special mention and for many, the Apple story could be a great case study and inspiration as well.

Regardless of whether you are dealing with products or services; whatever be the size of your venture, there are a number of things that you can learn from Apple’s great success story and apply in your special case. Your blog, as your project, hobby, passion or income generator and you as a blogger could take a leaf as well in order to innovate and keep the momentum for long term.

Tips for picking the right theme for your blog

For the last couple of days, I have been busy cleaning up the theme of this blog. Incidentally, D$ is using a free WordPress theme that was designed by the Daily Blog Tips team and I had to change a few things here and there before rolling it out initially. This time around, a couple of changes had to be done based on the feedbacks received from DP and SP forums’ website review sections.

After completing the style changes and reorganizing the components, I did some smoke test based on what I learned during my user interface development times. To my surprise I found that not only my particular theme but almost all WordPress themes available today do not conform to basic usability guidelines! A simple test of changing the text size (Large, Medium etc) via the web browser options did not have any positive visual impact!

Blog comment and comment moderation ethics

Of late, all my replies to comments in my own blog have been getting caught by Akismet spam protector. A few good blogger friends alerted me that whatever comments I post on their blogs are getting caught by the spam protection as well. Out of frustration, I contacted the Akismet support and the following was their reply:

DollarShower.com was marked as spam – bloggers had marked comments as that. It is removed from akismet for now but I would advise some care in commenting. – Mark

Firstly, a big thanks to akismet support team for having replied to my query so fast. Not many free services providers reply to their customers’ queries and hence this one definitely needs to be appreciated. Next, let me spend some time to dig into what he meant and what I have been doing as a commentator as well as moderator. Hopefully I can summarize my findings as a bunch of best practices towards the end of this post.
