Google has come up with their last page rank update of the year 2008 today! Unlike their previous PR updates, this time around Google has been more or less soft on most domain main (or home) pages as many of them retained or even improved their ranks. Hence the PR update this time has been a good New Year gift for many a blogger.

Google PR update is really something that most bloggers and webmasters look forward to and dread about. PR essentially means money and visibility for bloggers (Perhaps it means nothing for the common - today when I searched the All-Acronyms site for the short-form PR, I was surprised to learn that it didn’t exist there amongst 344 possible definitions for PR. I, in fact, submitted it there immediately). Anyway, as for D$, there was no change in the homepage PR, though I was expecting a PR4 this time. But as I maintained earlier, one has to dig into more details than just the home page PR.

As I have mentioned several times in the past, a good page rank (PR) on the homepage alone is not sufficient to get search visitors for your content. For real search ranking, individual posts and pages need to have good PR and a lot of backlinks as well. While, Google Webmaster Tools can provide backlinks related and overall visibility statistics, it doesn’t provide page ranks of individual pages.

While searching for tools that could provide PR for the whole blog content, I stumbled upon a bunch of FREE websites and excellent tools. I thought of sharing it here as it may be of use to many of you.

Having achieved a good page rank (PR by default refers to Google PR here) every webmaster’s and blogger’s aim should be to protect and even try to increase the same continuously. This is to make sure that the importance of the pages is preserved/increased to attract even more search visits. Although the Google public PR - a value ranging from 0 to 10 - is not the ultimate measure of importance of a page, it definitely has something to do with the internal search rank maintained by Google.

Very often, after getting a good PR, majority of the people get into aggressive acts such as ad sales, writing paid-reviews, giving away link love etc in an uncontrolled manner. Yet another Google page rank update is underway as it seems. My Google toolbar is showing a rank of 3 now for D$ which is not a bad news for a six months old blog. However, to be frank, I was expecting a PR4 (greed!) this time as my link building habit has been pretty much consistent.

Something seems to have gone wrong with my backlinks recently. A few others also have reported this problem. For the past week or so there has been a drop of up to 25-30% in my backlinks. Perhaps, Google was busy cleaning up some of them before the new PRs are publicized. Anyway, 3 is better than 2 and I wouldn’t mind taking it.
